Alaska Boat Registration requirements

To operate your vessel in Alaska, you must register your boat. All motorized vessels in Alaska are required to be registered except if the vessel is a:

  • Non-boats like ship's lifeboat, a seaplane, an inspected passenger vessel, or a single air mattress, single inner tube or other water toy.

  • Boat registered elsewhere operating on Alaska State waters for less than 90 consecutive days.

  • Boat owned by the Government.

  • Documented boats.


  • The registration documents must be carried on board at all times while using the vessel.

  • You can acquire your boat registration at the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles.

  • Registrations are valid for three years.

  • If the boat you own is sold, damaged, destroyed, or  a change occurs in your home adress you must notify the ADMV within 15 days.

  • With your registration, you will obtain a Certificate of number and decals, all of which are mandatory to operate your vessel.

You must display your registration number and decals in the following manner:


  1. On the forward part of your vessel well above the waterline.

  2. Paint the numbers or apply them as a decal, where law enforcement officials can easily read them.

  3. Use BLOCK style letters and numbers of at least 3 inches in height .The color must contrast with the hull. 

  4. Letters and numbers are to read from left to right and have a space (AK 4252 AF) or hyphen (AK-3534-AF) to separate letters and numbers. 

  5. Registration decals must be displayed within 6 inches in line with the registration number, on each side of the vessel. The expiration date appears on the registration decals.

Remove all expired registration decals and only display the current ones
