Do I need a boating safety education certificate to operate a watercraft in Maryland?

To operate a motorboat or PWC in Maryland, anyone born on or after July 1, 1972, must carry a boating safety education certificate proving they have passed a NASBLA approved boating safety education course.

What are the age restrictions to operate a powerboat in Maryland?
  • Anyone under the age of 16 without a boating safety certificate must be supervised by an individual born before July 1, 1972 or someone at least 18 years of age and who possesses a valid boating safety certificate when operating a motorized vessel 11 feet or greater in length. If the vessel is less than 11 feet in length, anyone possessing a valid boating safety certificate can provide supervision. 

  • PWC operators must be at least 16 years old, even if they have a boating safety education certificate.

At what age can a person be certified in Maryland?

There is no minimum age to take the boating safety education course.

What form(s) of identification does an operator have to carry on board?

Anyone subject to the mandatory education requirements must carry a boating safety education certificate.

Is Maryland boating education certificate accepted in other states?

Yes. All states that require boater education certification will recognize the Maryland Boat Operator's Certificate, due to NASBLA-approved course reciprocity for non-residents.
