Any person operating a motorized vessel on the waters of New Jersey* must possess a New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate.
Persons exempt from the rule:
- Out-of-state residents who are in New Jersey for less than 90 days, who are at least 16 years old, and who possess a certificate issued by their state of residence or proof of successful completion of a boat safety course approved by:
- Another state
- The US Coast Guard
- The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators
