Types of Marine Sanitation Devices (MSD)
Type I - MSD
Type I MSD is an on-board treatment device that utilizes physical and chemical processes to effectively treat sewage through the power of maceration and disinfection. Type I is designed specifically for vessels measuring 65 feet or less in length.
Type II - MSD
Type II is an on-board treatment device that utilizes biological or aerobic digestion system. Once the treatment process is complete, the waste can be safely discharged. Type II systems are found on large commercial vessels rather than recreational boats.
Type III - MSD
Type III is a holding tank where sewage is stored until it can be discharged on the shore or at sea, beyond three miles from shore.
