Anyone being towed behind a boat or PWC, in an activity such as water skiing, must wear a properly fitted Type I, II or III USCG-approved PFD. There must be a person, other than the operator, on board who is at least 12 years old and who continually observes the skier, or the towing vessel must be fitted with a wide-angle rear-view mirror.

The towing vessel must have a capacity rating at least equal to the number of people operating, observing, and being towed.

Towing people on water skis or similar devices is only permitted between sunrise and sunset.

It is vital that the operator and the skier pay attention to “no ski” zones. It is not permitted to ski within 100 feet of a commercial boat dock, moorage harbor, or swimming area. It is not permitted to ski within 2,000 feet of a lock or dam.

Vessels towing kites and similar airborne devices are subject to additional regulations:

  • An observer, at least 12 years of age, must be present (a wide-angle mirror is not permitted)
  • Not pass within 500 feet of commercial docks and ramps
  • Limit the tow rope to a maximum of 150 feet
  • Limit the number of persons being towed to a maximum of two.
