Requirements to have Sound-Producing Devices & Backfire Flame Arrestors in North Carolina
North Carolina Sound-Producing Devices requirements
Vessels less than 12 meters in length are not required to have a horn, whistle or bell but should have some means of producing an efficient sound signal.
Vessels between 12 and 20 meters in length must carry and horn or whistle that is audible for half a mile, and a bell that is at least 200 mm in diameter at the mouth.
Electronic sound producing devices are also permitted provided that they produce the appropriate sound characteristics and can be manually sounded if necessary.
North Carolina Backfire Flame Arrestors requirements
Inboard gasoline engines must have USCG-approved backfire flame arrestors fitted to the carburetors or have an arrangement of the carburetor/air-induction system that disperses any flames cause by engine back fire.
Flames must be dispersed so as to not endanger the vessel, persons on board, or nearby vessels or structures.
Navigation Lights
If a vessel of 10 horsepower or less is used during the period from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise on state-controlled waters it should carry a white light in the stern or have on board a flashlight in good working condition that is readily to hand and can be temporarily displayed in sufficient time to avoid a collision. This exception is not permitted on waters under federal jurisdiction.
