How to measure the length of the boat?
Length Overall (LOA)
This is the most widely used measurement. LOA is the total length of the boat from the very front (bow) to the very back (stern), including all fixed parts.
How to Measure Length Overall (LOA)
Follow these steps to measure the LOA:
-
Start at the bow
Identify the very front tip of the boat. This includes fixed features such as a bow pulpit, anchor roller, or bow sprit if they are permanently attached. -
Measure straight to the stern
Extend the measuring tape in a straight line to the farthest point at the back of the boat. -
Include fixed extensions
Do not include removable items such as outboard motors that tilt, detachable ladders, or temporary accessories. -
Read and record the measurement
Make sure the tape is straight and not sagging for the most accurate result.
Accurate boat length is important for several reasons:
-
Registration and licensing: Some rules depend on boat size.
-
Marina fees: Slip costs are often based on LOA, not hull length.
-
Trailering and storage: Knowing exact length helps avoid space issues.
-
Buying or selling: Advertised length may differ depending on how it’s measured.
-
Safety and performance: Size affects handling and capacity.
How to measure the beam of the boat?
The beam of the boat is the width at the widest part of the boat.
To measure the beam, stand inside the boat and run a measuring tape from the left to the right side at the widest point of the boat.
