The state of Alabama requires the following people to be wearing a Type I, II, III, or Type V U. S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) on board at all times:
All children under the age of 8 while onboard any vessel unless in an enclosed cabin or enclosed sleeping area regardless of whether the vessel is in operation.
All persons on a vessel within 800 feet below a hydroelectric dam and/or navigation lock and dam.
Anyone operating or riding as a passenger on a PWC.
Anyone being towed on water skis, surfboard, disc, spinners, tubes or other similar devices.
It is illegal to operate of a vessel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the state of Alabama. A person can be convicted of boating under the influence (BUI) for operating a vessel while:
Under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any other intoxicating substance "to a degree which renders him or her incapable of safely" operating a vessel,
or
Having a BAC of .08% or higher

- Who is required to take the boating safety course in Alabama?
The state of Alabama requires any motorized boat operator over 12 years of age to successfully complete a NASBLA approved boater safety course prior to navigating on the waters of Alabama.
- Who is exempt from needing the Alabama boating license ?
Any boat operator who was born prior to April 28, 1954 is exempt from this requirement.
Non-residents 12 years old and older, may operate on Alabama waters up to 45 days per calendar year without having to obtain a vessel operator's license.
Holders of a valid US Coast Guard motorboat license are also exempt.
- What are the age restrictions regarding boating safety in Alabama?

Must be 12 years old or older to be eligible for a vessel operator's license but cannot operate alone until the age of 14.

Operators 12 or 13 years old, after obtaining the vessel operator's license, can only operate if there is someone 21 years old or older on board, who also has a vessel operator's license in possession, and is seated in a position to take immediate control of the vessel if necessary.

Operators 14 years old or older, after obtaining the vessel operator's license, may legally operate without supervision.
NOTE: The operator certification/license must be in possession at the time of operation.

- Do I need to register my boat in Alabama?
Yes, all mechanically propelled boats, sailboats, and boats for hire, (except for canoes) must be registered in Alabama. Boat owners can register, renew, or transfer boat ownership at any County License office.

Every U.S. state that demands a boating license will accept Boating Education Licenses from other states that conform to NASBLA requirements as well.
