Quebec Boating Laws & Regulations Quebec boating license
Do I need a boating license to operate a motorized boat in Quebec?
Yes. As of September 2009 all boaters are required to have a boating license in order to operate a powered watercraft. This regulation applies to all boaters, with no exceptions based on age. All powered watercraft, including those equipped with electric trolling motors, are included in this requirement.
Youth under 16 years of age may not operate boats with motors over certain horsepower limits unless someone 16 years of age or older is in the boat and directly supervising them.
You must be at least 16 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
Operators need to be aware that engaging in certain behaviors while boating can result in criminal charges and potential penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Some offenses also go against the Criminal Code of Canada (Contraventions Act).

Boat registration in Quebec
You can either “license” or “register” your pleasure craft. A “licensed” pleasure craft is different from a “registered” pleasure craft.
While there are associated costs, registering your pleasure craft offers valuable benefits such as establishing legal ownership with a title, the privilege to proudly display the Canadian flag, a distinctive name and official number for your boat, and the ability to utilize your vessel as collateral for a marine mortgage.
