Boating Laws & Regulations in Nova Scotia
Operate a boat without a boating license Nova Scotia

Do I need a boating license to operate a boat in Nova Scotia ?

Yes. As of September 2009 all boaters are required to have a boating license in order to operate a powered watercraft. There is no grandfather clause or age exemption – this law applies to all boaters. All powered watercraft, including those equipped with electric trolling motors, are included in this requirement.

Although there is no minimum age for obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, there are certain horsepower restrictions for those under the age of 16.

You must be at least 16 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).

Boaters should be  aware that certain behaviors while out on the water could lead to facing criminal charges and potential consequences, such as fines or imprisonment. Some offenses also go against the Criminal Code of Canada (Contraventions Act).

Nova Scotia speed limits while boating

When boating in Nova Scotia and some other provinces,  you must observe the unposted speed limit of 10 km/h (6 mph ) within 30 meters (100 ft ) from shore. This limit applies on all waters except where other limits are posted.

Every vessel shall proceed at a safe speed so that you can take proper and appropriate action to avoid collision.

Boat registration in Nova Scotia

Boat registration in Nova Scotia

You can either “license” or “register” your pleasure craft. A “licensed” pleasure craft is different from a “registered” pleasure craft.

Registering your pleasure craft offers valuable benefits such as establishing legal ownership with a title, the privilege to proudly display the Canadian flag, a distinctive name and official number for your boat, and the ability to utilize your vessel as collateral for a marine mortgage.
