Manitoba Boating Laws & Regulations Manitoba boating license
Do I need a boating license to operate a boat in Manitoba?
Yes. As of September 2009 all boaters are required to have a boating license in order to operate a powered watercraft. This regulation applies to all boaters, with no exceptions. All powered watercraft, including those equipped with electric trolling motors, are included in this requirement.
There is no minimum age for obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. However, there are certain horsepower restrictions for those under the age of 16.
You must be at least 16 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
Operators need to be aware that engaging in certain behaviors while boating can result in criminal charges and potential penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Some offenses also go against the Criminal Code of Canada (Contraventions Act).
Manitoba speed limits while boating
When boating in Manitoba, you must observe the unposted speed limit of 10 km/h (6 mph ) within 30 meters (100 ft ) from shore. This limit applies on all waters except where other limits are posted.
Always proceed at a safe speed so that you can take proper and appropriate action to avoid collision, and be able to stop in a safe distance, and appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions.
Boat registration in Manitoba
You can either “license” or “register” your pleasure craft. A “licensed” pleasure craft is different from a “registered” pleasure craft.
Registering your pleasure craft offers valuable benefits such as establishing legal ownership with a title, the privilege to proudly display the Canadian flag, a distinctive name and official number for your boat, and the ability to utilize your vessel as collateral for a marine mortgage.
