What does upstream mean on a boat?

Upstream means towards the source of the river (from where the flow originates).

If we sail upstream

Streams ← rivers ← sea

What does downstream mean on a boat? 

Downstream means towards where the flow ends, at the opposite end of the waterway from the source.

If we sail downstream

Streams → rivers → sea

What should be done when going upstream?

When going upstream, keep the:

• Red buoy on your starboard side (right side)

• Green buoy on your port side (left side)
