Do I need a License to Operate a Boat in New York? Mandatory Boater Education
Yes, as of January 1, 2025, all operators of motorized vessels in New York State must hold a Boating Safety Certificate, regardless of age. While not a traditional "driver's license," this certificate is mandatory, earned by completing an approved safety course. It applies to jet skis, fishing boats, and all motorboats
Age restrictions
To operate a motorboat, you must be at least 10 years of age. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).
