What is a Florida Boating Safety Education Identification Card?
A Florida Boating Safety Education Identification Card is an official proof that you’ve completed an approved boating safety course in Florida.
It is required for people who must take boating education—especially those born on or after January 1, 1988 when operating motorized boats over 10 horsepower.
Once you pass an approved course, you receive this card (or a temporary certificate) to carry while boating. It shows law enforcement that you understand Florida boating rules, safety practices, navigation, and responsible operation.
In short, it’s your proof of boating safety training and is required for many boaters, including most jet ski (PWC) operators.
You don’t need the card if you are:
- Licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as a vessel master
- Boating on a private lake or pond
- With someone on board who is exempt or is 18+ and responsible for the boat
- Using a boat within 90 days of buying it (you must carry the bill of sale)
You must carry the card
If you are required to have the Florida Boater Card, you must keep it on the boat.
If you don’t have it when asked, you can be fined.
Visitors
If you’re visiting, Florida accepts boating cards from:
- Other U.S. states and territories
- Canada (Pleasure Craft Operator Card)
No driver’s license needed
You can get a Florida Boater Education Certificate even if you don’t have a driver’s license.
