FAQ - Boating in Nevada
- Do I need a boating license to operate a watercraft in Nevada?
Effective January 1, 2003, anyone born on or after January 1, 1983 must obtain a certificate of boating safety education from an approved NDOW provider before operating a motorboat or personal watercraft. The certificate must be in possession of the operator and readily available for inspection by a law enforcement officer whenever the vessel is in operation.
- Who is exempt from having to acquire a boating license?

Anyone at least 16 years old, who is resident of another state and is visiting the State for a maximum of 60 days in a vessel numbered in another state.

Anyone who is visiting the State for a maximum of 90 days in a vessel from another country.

A vessel that is being operated for commercial purposes.

- I do not have a driver's license. Can I still get the Nevada boating license?
You are not required to have a state driver's license in order to obtain a boater education card.
- How can I get a replacement boating education card if I've lost it?
Before we can replace your boating card we must be sure that we originally issued it to you. Check with us by calling our toll-free number at 1 877 661-1938 to talk to an agent, or send us an email including your date of birth and we will contact you by email within 24 hours, during our office hours.

- Is Nevada boating license accepted in other states?
Yes. All states that require boater education certification will recognize the Nevada Boat Operator's Certificate, due to a NASBLA-approved course reciprocity for non-residents.
- What are the age restrictions to drive a motorboat in Nevada?
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to operate a vessel towing someone on water skis or similar device. However, if a person is at least 12 years old and has onboard someone who is at least 18 years of age to supervise the operator, that person may operate the boat.
PWC operators must be at least 14 years old, even if they have a boating safety education certificate, and each person onboard a PWC must wear a USCG- approved PFD.
- What is the minimum age for a person to be certified in Nevada?
There is no age limit as long as they can pass the test.
- How long is a boating license valid in Nevada?
