Do you have to take a test to rent a boat in Florida?
If you intend to rent a boat in Florida and were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, you can either :
- Complete an approved boating safety course which will provide you with Boating Safety Education Identification Card which will be valid for life; or
- Get a Temporary Certificate online which will allow you to rent and operate a boat in Florida, which will be valid for 90 days.

What is a Temporary Certificate? (TC)
The Temporary Certificate Program (TCP) was established to help people comply with the Boater Education Law passed in 1996. The temporary certificate is a knowledge check which satisfies the requirement for a boater to have a boating safety identification card to operate a boat in Florida.
How many questions are on the Florida boating certificate?
The online exam will be 25 questions, randomly selected from a large bank of questions. If a person passes the exam, they will be provided with an electronic temporary certificate showing their successful completion and their passing score.
Can the livery check the Florida boat rental Temporary Certificate?
The TC can be inspected by a livery prior to renting to ensure the prospective renter has met Florida’s boating safety education requirements.
